Survival (commonly now referred to by the retronym, Survival 1) was the first Survival Multiplayer world of the Dogcraft Server and one of the original worlds available on launch, alongside Amplified, MCMMO, Creative and Skyblock. Out of these worlds, Survival was the most populated world of early server history. Alongside the rest of the server, the world was initially opened to a whitelist of players on the 28th of September 2015 and later opened to the wider public on the 14th of November that year.

Beginnings

An announcement of a new, official dogcraft server was made on dogcraft.net sometime in late June or July 2015. The earliest public mention of the Survival world is found in a video by ReNDoG on the 7th of August 2015. Alongside these mentions, a forum thread was made for players to apply for building the server hub. Many players put their name forward, and a ballot was needed to select them. These players were subsequently invited to test the new world, and given the pioneer rank on server launch.

The world was launched without an end dimension, with the knowledge that the 1.9 update would change the end significantly. The end was added on the 21st of May 2016 with a large opening event.

Getting Around

An increasing amount of travel options were available throughout Survival.

Warps

Command warps were added as needed, with the exception of /spawn and /warp pigfarm which were present from the start of the world.

  • /spawn - Took you to Spawn
  • /warp pigfarm - Took you to the original Pigman Farm
  • /warp old_mall - Took you to the original Mall
  • /warp towncentre - Took you to Stream Town
  • /warp end - Took you to the End Portal
  • /endfarm - Took you to the Enderman Farm (while in the end dimension)
  • /warp mall - Took you to the Mall (later renamed to '/warp survival_mall' with the advent of Survival 2)
  • /warp pigfarm2.0 - Took you to the second Pigman Farm

With the closure of the world, these commands no longer exist.

Survival Railway Network

Main Article: Survival Railway Network

The Survival Railway Network (SRN) was founded months into the Survival world, and comprised a community-operated overworld public transport service that consisted of a number of minecart railway lines across the world that centered around it's Spawn Station. The SRN linked other major location and bases via secondary lines.

Nether Transport Network

Main Article: Nether Transport Network

The Nether Transport Network (NTN) on Survival was the nether-based counterpart to the Survival Railway Network, which was based on high-speed transportation using of boats on packed ice to get around quickly. It was founded after the success of the SRN and just like it, the NTN could be accessed from a variety of locations across the server.

Major Locations

Several locations of major note have been created on the Survival world.

Spawn City

A wide shot of the Spawn City

Main Article: Spawn (Survival 1)

The first settlement on any Dogcraft world, Spawn City is in close proximity to the spawn point of the world. Server pioneers begun building here in the first days of Survival, and momentum for the unregulated fledgling city carried until many months later. Spawn City is thought of as the largest city on the Survival World, and likely of any world.

Stream Town

Main Article: Stream Town

An impulse decision by server owner ReNDoG during his first livestream on the Dogcraft server in May 2016 pronounced the founding of Stream Town. The town was created with the intention of being the scene of weekly streams from him. Server Headmods victix11 and StaircaseClimber are responsible for most of the infrastructure for the plot-based town. Stream Town was a relatively short-lived sensation, but had a continued legacy as a location for quests, builds, projects and server history.

Lackria

Main Article: Lackria

Lackria was founded in June 2016 by William278. Along with SENsationals02, they set about creating a player-built, plot based city. The city expanded quickly and grew to become one of the largest and most talked about locations on the world. Lackria's player built and managed style became a major influence on subsequent cities and towns in other worlds.

Closure

On the 14th of October, 2018, it was announced that the Survival world, along with all other existing worlds would be deleted and replaced with the Survival 2 world the following week. On the night of Friday the 19th the world was removed and on the morning of the 20th replaced by the new world along with the update to Minecraft 1.13: The Update Aquatic.

Survival 2 was the second Survival Multiplayer world of the Dogcraft Server, succeeding the long-standing Survival world. It was rumored that a new survival world would be created to increase player interest with new players and reduce lag caused by the enormous size of the original world, however, no official announcement came until June 2017 when it was announced that while the original world would remain online, a new survival world would be created to launch in September.

On the 2nd of September, 2017, the Survival 2 world was finally released for all players in a livestream with ReNDoG.[1] Just over a year later, on the 20th of October, 2018, the world would be succeeded with Survival 3.

Announcement

Speculation

Prior to the announcement of the Survival 2 world, there was some speculation as to the creation of a new world, which many players believed due to how long the Survival world had been running as the primary world and the upcoming 1.12 update. The idea of launching a new world was met with some criticism amongst longstanding players, as players felt that the Survival world should remain the primary world on the server given its legacy.

Reveal

The announcement of a new world came on June 1ˢᵗ from then Headmod Rustbite, via the dogcraft forums. In addition, it was confirmed that both worlds would remain on the server to play on, though the Survival 2 world would become the main world for the server. A ReNDoG livestream would be done to open the world on the 2nd of September later that same year.

Main Article: Survival 2 Launch Event

The Survival 2 world was launched via a livestream with ReNDoG, in the form of a role-playing quest where viewers along with ReNDoG had to battle the 'dwarves' (played by server moderators and members of the build team), leading up to a grand battle with the Ender Dragon.

The story was told via written books, which were handed out before the final battle. Due to an erroneous teleport, all players were killed and inventories were wiped. The only known surviving books, player amour and weapons, and moderator weapons are in Scooberson's spawn opening museum.

Key Locations

Throughout the development of the Survival 2 world, many builds and locations were created[2].

Spawn

Main Article: Spawn (Survival 2)

Spawn was the center point of the Survival 2 world, where the World Border was centered around and where new players joined. Spawn had a number of plots for players to purchase and live in and featured a number of key builds involved in the launch of the Survival 2 World. Spawn was built in Creative Mode prior to the release of the world.

Havana

Main Article: City of Havana

The City of Havana, based loosely on the Cuban city with the same name, was founded on the same day the new Survival 2 world opened.[3] Originally founded by SRN Spawn Station build team, _edo, Brianetta and darparniox in response to lack of functionality of Spawn, the city's scope quickly expanded to become the travel hub and culture center of the world.[4] It could be accessed by travelling south of Spawn Station and was the largest settlement on the server.

In April 2018, ReNDoG toured Havana in a base tour video.[5]

Akkara

Main Article: Akkara City
Akkara's Temples of the Gods, the centerpiece of the city.

Akkara City was a city based on a mix between Aztec and Colonial architecture[6] and was founded on the launch of the Survival 2 world simultaneously with Havana, however, the city did not open to the public until months later. The project was originally started by William278, mayor of Lackria on the original Survival world, and LAK3RS, who holds the Pioneer rank and was an accomplished builder on the server before the launch of the new world. A decision was made during the opening of the world to open the city in the coordinate center of the world at (0, 0), and an island was built at the location with a connective bridge to commemorate this.

On the 28th of April 2018, Akkara City opened with an organized event and a livestreamed base tour opening with ReNDoG.[7] It was considered to be the second largest settlement on the server, after the City of Havana.

On the 30th of June, 2018, Akkara was toured again by ReNDoG in an update tour, though this was never released.

Getting Around

There were a number of options for travelling around the Survival 2 world. Players could use the /sethome command across the server to return to places as they liked[8], and in addition to this there were a number of public transport options available:

Commands & Warps:

A number of areas were publicly available to teleport to with commands:

  • /spawn - Took you to Spawn.
  • /warp end2 - Took you to the End Portal.
  • /warp pigfarm2 - Took you to the Pigman Farm.
  • /endfarm - Took you to the Enderman Farm (while in the end dimension.)
  • /warp colorful - Took you to the Colors Event area.

Survival 2 Railway Network

The Survival 2 Railway Network (SRN) was a community-operated overworld public transport service that consisted of a number of minecart railway lines across the Survival 2 world. It could be accessed from a number of major builds and settlements through the Survival 2 world, such as Spawn. It was centered in the City of Havana. The SRN also linked smaller builds via Secondary Lines and networks from stations.

Survival 3 was the third major Survival Multiplayer world on the Dogcraft Server, succeeding the Survival 2 world. It was released on the 20th of October, 2018 and updated the server to version 1.13: The Update Aquatic. Alongside the release of the new world, all previous survival worlds were discontinued as a result of the update process. After over a year and 5 months, Survival 3 was discontinued on the 31st of March, 2020, to make way for Survival 4. Alongside this came a total reset of claim blocks and Dogcraft Dollars.

Announcement and Update

The Grand Map of Survival 3 continued efforts on Survival 2 to map out Dogcraft's worlds.

After the release of the major Minecraft 1.13 update in July 2018, speculation about the update of the server the newer version had been rife in the community. Although no information from staff was given, the common thought was that the current Survival 2 would be updated to 1.13, as it was much younger than the Survival 1 server when it was succeeded.

On the 15th of October, it was announced that all worlds except for Creative would be deleted and that a new survival world would be created on the 20th. Balances would be reset, but not claimblock amounts or farm passes and no world download was provided. Soon after, it was announced that Spawn for this new world had already been built and preview shots were shared across the week.

The announcement sent the community into a spin of shock, confusion and grief. Several players lashed out to begin with, and moderators had a tough task to contain panic. The edge was taken off the hard reset by enabling the use of the mod world downloader on the server to create files of existing builds, and the seed was released.

Over the week leading to the update, players gradually adjusted to the news and began to create plans for the new world. Some players found they didn't have the appetite for the server after these events, but many continued on.

Early Issues

The downtime while the server was updated and worlds switched was short, only around three hours. An opening livestream by ReNDoG was conducted on the 21ˢᵗ and introduced new players to the server. The average player count rose dramatically to around 60, for weeks, detrimental to ticks-per-second rate and general server performance. The End dimension was accidentally left open on launch, and players managed to collect elytra before it was closed. Plugins had issues. Teleport points using /home were disabled for a time due to bugs. The payment plugin gave random positive or negative amounts of Dogcraft Dollars every hour and balances needed to be reset after the issues were fixed.

Several measures were taken to improve server playability. The End was given a border at 12,500 blocks in each direction in order to limit file size, and server render distance was dropped to four chunks among other less obvious changes. Gradually, player numbers stabilised and these limitations were able to be relaxed.

Maturation

The Survival 3 world did hit maturity after some initial issues. Many large projects begun and server life returned to it's past state. A main hallmark of the Survival 3 world was the emergence of even larger, stronger, and more pronounced social groups on the server. This was amplified by the large overall growth of the community, due to ReNDoG's increasing fanbase and several 'base tour booms'. Another unique development was the rise of leagues systems as a vehicle for player events, such as the Dogcraft Spleef League and Dogcraft Ice Boat League, which were eventually merged into one umbrella. On the 24th of September 2019, the server was updated to Minecraft version 1.14 after incurring a loss of data, causing a rollback. The new update brought welcomed new features, though unfortunately without a world border increase due to hardware limitations.

Major Locations

Spawn City

Main Article: Spawn City

Spawn City Overhead

During the life span of survival 3, Spawn City grew up in the middle of a large ocean around Spawn Basin, which was built in creative prior to the world launch. The Spawn Basin provided many major features such as the Grand Map, nether- and end portal, as well as Grand Central Station, custom villager trading and seasonal decoration and mini-events. The surrounding Spawn City offered additional features, such as head quarters for many organisations (e.g. Events Team, SRN, Staff, Wiki Team) the server's main Post Office, displays of artwork, a Public Library and more.

Founded by 20.png Dutchsoccer and 20.png Mc_Lelouch in the first days of Survival 3, The Home Tree became one of the biggest and longest running projects across any Survival world. Based around an extremely large custom tree filled with farms, the build expanded to include player plots and the Aborist City. The Home Tree was one of the earliest featured base tours by ReNDoG in Survival 3, and its core group grew one of the biggest communities throughout the world.

Chronia

Main Article: Chronia

The Isle of Chronia was a widely successful large scale building project with a public component. It was founded by many of the former member of Hydropolis and began on the first day of the world on a mushroom island. Ragecorp

Main Article: Ragecorp

Ragecorp went through several business iterations in the concrete business before becoming a building collective in the latter half of Survival 3. Led by 20.png Ragecage295 and 20.png Princess223, they completed several large projects from their base at Ragecorp Tower. During these processes, Ragecorp amassed a large and very influential community that has become one of the biggest in Dogcraft history.

The city was located in the end and construction began in December 2019 before an opening in February, developing an affinity for using video as a marketing tool and becoming one of the biggest cities on Survival 3 in the process.

Getting Around

Each player can use /home to set a personal teleport point. In addition, /rtp takes the player to a random set of coordinates. There are several ways to move to specific public places in the world.

Warps

  • /spawn - Takes you to Spawn (this changes between the overworld and Nether)
  • /warp mall - Takes you to the Mall
  • /endfarm - Takes you to the enderman farm (while in the end)
  • /pigfarm - Takes you to the pigman farm (while in the end)

Many other warps were available to lead to an event area.

Survival Railway Network

The Nether Transport Network (NTN) is the nether-based counterpart to the Survival Railway Network, which uses the mechanic of boats placed on packed ice to get around quickly. Just like the SRN, the NTN could be accessed from a variety of locations across the server.

Closure

An announcement was made on the 14ᵗʰ of March 2020 announcing that the physical server location was moving on the 1ˢᵗ of April. This move to a new server and location would bring many benefits to the community, but it also would bring the closure of the Survival 3 world along with a total reset of player data. Prior to the reset, the current Survival 3 world was updated to Minecraft 1.15 for the remaining couple of weeks, and the overworld world border was expanded. During this transition period, the use of the mod World Downloader was allowed for players to download their bases into a single player world. Many downloads can be found on the World Downloads/Survival 3 page.
