Halloween 2020 Escape room is a build on the Survival 4 world of the Dogcraft Server.
About
The Escape room was an attraction as part of the Halloween event of 2020. Most puzzles were designed and built by R0bstar, with the exception of the garden puzzle, which was designed and built by RY44. The building was designed and mostly built by R0bstar, indoor decoration was done by the amazing SnazzyK101.
The escape room is not timed, you do not fail it after a certain amount of time. It was divided in three parts to allow more players to play it at the same time. A few test-plays showed that it is typically completed in between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes, although someone did it in 35 minutes.
Story
You find yourself stuck in a cave, and the only way out is into the back garden of a large mansion. The only way out of the garden is through the mansion, but it seems to be deserted. Learn about the story of Lord Grim and his family as you try to get into the mansion, and escape out the front.
History
The escape room was built as a classic one, telling a story as you solve puzzles and giving few hints on what the puzzle actually is that you need to solve. Test-playing showed this was too challenging for some players. As a solution, an optional "story mode" was installed in the form of extra (specially marked) lecterns that tells the player through story-telling what the puzzles is that they need to complete.
R0bstar started designing it on paper in August 2020 and started building in September. After working on it for over two months, time was up. This resulted in a bit of story-telling in a book at the end of the escape room, instead of a puzzle telling it. Otherwise, the event was fully completed.
How to play
The Escape room is for download. Simply read the lecterns and signs that you see before and upon entering. There is an instruction video on Youtube as well (click).
Please note that you should never*:
- Open or close doors by yourself (just pretend they are all iron doors)
- Remove any items from item frames (note: using / turning items in frames is allowed)
- Break any blocks, paintings, or anything else
* All these things were prevented with permissions on the server
Otherwise the main guidelines are:
- Lecterns marked as "story-telling mode" should not be read if you like the additional challenge! They give away about half of the puzzle.
- Each part of the escape room has its own hint room with lecterns. You can get subtle hints (and by the end: the solution) to all the puzzles. Because you are (likely) playing in Single Player, feel free to take the books out (and then open the door that closed behind you).
- You will find that all puzzles have been designed in such a way that you leave things behind the way you found it, so the next player can use it. This is why doors close behind you when you change a page on a book in a lectern (or remove the book) or turn an item in a frame.
