one thing I did for 30k dcd is take a silk touch pick and 're-mine' an emerald ore =P I hope that is allowed

I think a lot of people did that. I really don't feel that is the intended method for completing the quest. I don't think it is much different then using a name tag on a zombie or enderman to complete those quests.
