Rule #6: Mods
« on: May 18, 2017, 03:05:01 am »
Now I understand that no mods can be used except for the use of optifine and shaders. Yet without any sort of live map thing for the server itself, would it be possible for the minimum use of a minimap mod?

I am not using one myself, but I was just wondering if the minimap mods like:

-JourneyMap
-Xaero’s Minimap
-Mapwriter 2
-VoxelMap (No Radar)
-Zan’s Minimap

The reason for my thinking is because people could get lost or wouldn't be able to find others that easily. This also goes by when there was the live map people could easily if another person was nearby, and could easily go over there to say hi, or something of the sort.

That is really all. Sorry for this "rant", just wondering about the mods thing.

With the Hermitron game on the server a minimap might provide a pretty unfair advantage.
So my guess is that you just need to make your own maps on the server if you want and resort to old school pen and paper to write down coordinates of points of interest.

Not actually a server headmod anymore, so take this answer with a pinch of salt ^^ But the main reason we used to only allow Optifine and Shaders is because there are so many mods out there, and so many different mods can give the player an unfair advantage over others. There is no possible way we can weed through all of them to make sure they don't give anyone an unfair advantage (and continue doing this as the mods update). The same can be said for the minimaps, some allow the option to see players, others make you able to see mobs, some others might make it easier to find new structures in the game (ocean monuments, end ships etc) and all these other features that will give a player using a minimap an advantage over anyone who chooses not to use one. Plus there are a few worlds and minigames that would be much more heavily impacted by minimaps, UHC and Hermitron are obvious ones, but even the MCMMO world, a world more focused around PVP would see the effects of this (in a negative way). The Dynamic Map gave us the ability to control what everyone could and couldn't see and it made sure everyone had access to it without the need to install any other software or mods onto their computers. We could turn off the map for certain worlds, make it so players cant be seen in a certain world, give players the option to hide themselves from the dynmap altogether. It's a much more controllable environment than allowing minimap mods could ever be.
Plus with commands like /back, /spawn, /home etc, getting lost isn't as big of a deal as it would be in a singleplayer world. We even have moderators ready to help you find back your build if you forgot to set a home and have lost your /back location. And with tpa commands "finding" other players is as easy as sending them a teleport request, this of course might not be as exciting, but it is far easier.
Hope this answers your question to some extent :)
