Naming contest.
« on: June 03, 2018, 10:07:55 am »
I'm trying to start a futuristic city but i don't have a name for it yet. It's a floating block of concrete now, but hey, you can't start too soon, right? You can put your suggestions down below and my favorite name will be used when the city opens. Here are the guidelines:
-it has to fit with a sci-fi theme (you can do others but they have a lower winning chance).
-nothing offensive (but you probably knew that, right?).
-if your name has a meaning, tell me what it means.
-sci-fi references are allowed.
Contest is over when i open the city, idk when that is.
Hope to see a lot of suggestions!

(Sorry if it doesn't fit in the events category)

A quick Google search told me that _edo's suggestion wasn't a 'random mess', but part of the lyrics of a -slightly lesser known- Michael Jackson song.

Ok, hope this helps..

When I think of possible names the first things that came to mind are Star Wars planets and then existing planets or heavenly bodies. So after a little 'google foo' I found two wiki pages that contain lots of ideas.

Some obscure Star Wars planet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_planets_and_moons

You could go with something like Naboo or Dantooine, there are several to choose from.

Then I got really distracted at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_naming_conventions

Lots of ideas there with existing names or using some of the conventions to invent your own.  Betelgeuse, Rigel and Vega are some examples of existing stars. But combining something with a letter from the Greek alphabet make them sound really good (Bayer designation).

So maybe something like..

Alpha Canis or Gamma Lupin (both with Greek alphabet and Latin word for dog, it is dogcraft)
Iota Ryloth (just greek alphabet with obscure star wars planet)

I don't know. Good luck coming up with a name.
