Wither Mechanics question with no mob griefing
« on: February 08, 2018, 08:05:35 pm »
I've been grinding away in a nether fortress for a while and have finally acquired my third wither skull to summon the beast. Before I do, I have a question I'd like to throw out there just to make sure I understand the way the server works.

I know mob griefing is off above a certain level so creepers and enderman don't mess up the place, and I've seen Quasi's zoo with the trapped wither, so is it safe to assume I can cheese it by building a 3x3 box to summon it in without it blowing it to smithereens and wrecking everything? Do I need to be in claimed chunks?

I've done the fight enough times in vanilla to know how much it sucks, I just want a beacon...

What a lot of us use is the bedrock trick - claiming a few blocks around and including a 3x3 space in the bedrock at the roof of the Nether. The space has to be flat and as said measure 3x3. When CLAIMED this can include netherrack since it won’t break. You place a block 3 spaces below that (leaving a 2 space gap between it and the roof) and build the wither sideways on it. Then, when it rises, it gets trapped in the roof and suffocates while you wail away at it with a sword. This prevents both massive destruction and makes killing it much easier.

Though some of us have just built massive wither fighting arenas beneath our bases - WITH CLAIMED BLOCKS. As long as you can prevent escape and destruction.

Being on the top of the Nether - as in going above the bedrock to the empty space above, like where the zombie pig farm is - is what’s not allowed. Digging to the bedrock and using it from underneath is a-ok.

I've used the bedrock ceiling trick in my single player world. I believe Xisuma showed how to set it up early in season v, it's just finding that perfect bedrock spot that's the issue. My single player world is the season v seed, so I was able to just go to his same cords and locate it. That's why I was asking if their spawn explosion and attacks destroyed claimed blocks or not so I could build a containment building in the overworld to contain the fight. If, as you said, netherrack doesn't break when it's claimed, I think my idea would work too, although suffocating it in the roof might be safer still.

Ok, thanks for the clarification :) The good news is that claimed blocks don’t break, so you can do this with just netherrack. For safety and extra insurance I personally use a spot that is a mix of netherrack and bedrock (better safe than sorry) because you’re right, it’s hard to find a good spot that’s just bedrock.

You can also do this on the overworld. Make all precautions against accidental release. One has gotten loose before.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought the bedrock ceiling of the nether is generated the same in each seed. Only the contents of the nether are different.
So coords of a spot in one seed should be usable in all seeds.
Might be wrong though...

I think you're right.
And I also think you can 'just' make some kind of jail in the overworld inside a claim, then spawn the wither in there. The wither then won't break your jail and escape.
And yeah, you can alternatively also still use the bedrock ceiling in the nether trick.

Well, I did it. I built a structure above ground in the overworld inside a claimed area to spawn it into. It is cube within a cube with an outer 9x9 shell and an inner 5x5 cube. Inside the inner cube, I left a 3x3 space 2 high to spawn it lying down. I had the door to the spawn hole facing one side and the door to the outside on a different side. It spawned and had its head in the blocks above its spawn space within the inner cube, just like with using the bedrock in the nether. It made for an easy fight.

Thanks everyone for the information. I've already got my beacon shining bright. The only thing missing is the 81 blocks for the very bottom layer of the base, but that'll come soon, then haste 2 at last!
