Enchanting Challenge
« on: April 01, 2018, 07:32:38 am »
After reading about _gewooniemand troubles trying to enchant a bow a couple days ago, I decide to research the proper way to enchant and I discovered that I've been enchanting incorrectly my entire minecrafting life. I then decide to create this challenge to pass on the knowledge that I've learnt.

Challenge:
Enchant a pair of boots with all of the possible enchantments using books, including thorns III, curse of binding and vanishing.
Directions -
Open a creative world
Place down 2-3 anvils
From the creative menu, add a pair of unenchanted diamond boots and the 8 books (mending, unbreaking III, protection IV, feather falling IV, curse of binding, curse of vanishing, thorn III, depth strider III)
Give yourself 1000 levels with the command /xp 1000l @p
Ensure that you are safe from mobs etc (consider playing of peaceful)
Switch gamemode to survival (/gamemode 0)
Get all 8 of the enchantments on the boots

Post your solutions below. I'm interested to see the various techniques everyone uses.
I will post my solution in about a day or 2. I just came up with it so I would like to see if it could be optimized and maybe discover something that I'm overlooking.
This is NOT an April Fools joke. It is doable.

p.s. _gewooniemand if you're reading this, I believe your power V book required 8 levels because it was created by combining power III books.

My solution:
tl;dr minimize the rework count on the final item.

1) Rank the enchantments in order of least to most expensive to add.
This can be done by actually putting them in the anvil to see the cost or by following the "Anvil Mechanics" page on gamepedia.
ex: mending (2) < unbreaking III (3) < protection IV (4) < feather falling IV (4) < curse of binding (4) < curse of vanishing (4) < depth strider III (6) < thorns III (12)

2) Combine them in pairs. Cheap with cheap and expensive with expensive.
ex: mending with unbreaking III, protection IV with feather faling IV, curse of binding with curse of vanishing, depth strider III with thorns III.
This gives each pair a rework count of 1.
Ensure the more expensive enchantment is in the first slot ex: Unbreaking III in the first slot and mending in the second.

3) Combine them again. Again cheap with cheap and expensive with expensive.
ex: mending with unbreaking III with protection IV with feather falling IV;
curse of binding with curse of vanishing with depth strider III with thorns III.
Each now have a rework count of 2.

4) Combine the boots with the more expensive enchants first.
ex: Boots with curse of binding with curse of vanishing with depth strider III with thorns III
The boots now have a rework count of 3.

5) Combine the boots with the final book.
ex: Boots with curse of binding with curse of vanishing with depth strider III with thorns III with mending with unbreaking III with protection IV with feather falling IV
The boots now have a rework count of 4.

If you added them one at a time the boots would have a rework count of 8 which is impossible to achieve in survival.

 Hope this helped someone.

I don't think that most of the hermits use this method. Both cubfan135 and MumboJumbo ran into problems when enchanting stuff. Just last video Mumbo couldn't add looting III to his sword because of it.

I haven't been really detailed into this stuff, but I agree with what you write.
Most important thing is to make sure you don't have to add/combine too many times on the same item.

I always enchant items with max level of a type (eg sharpness4).  If i can't get what I want I reset the enchantment table by enchanting a book with 1 level.

Thanks for the info. I'm a survival noob and this is helpful.
