Elytra in the Shop?
« on: August 24, 2017, 02:07:05 am »
So question for the people in charge of putting things in the shop here.. have, or would you consider putting Elytra in the site shop?

The bar for finding an elytra when you don't already possess one grows higher by the day, and even on sparsely used areas like MCMMO, it can lead to hours of time spent trudging around the End only to stumble upon someone else's old bridge across the void, while people with elytra continue getting new ones and widening the gulf between the haves and the have-nots even wider.

I should imagine they would be at least as expensive as a permanent warp card for the end farm, and pricing them at the same $250k would in no way reduce the value of the warp cards. Not only that, but it'd certainly help pull in some big DCD purchases/expenditures from those of us that already have warp cards, myself included.

It would certainly help those of us entrenched on a less-used part of the server, where attempting to purchase a set of wings with diamonds is a straight up lost cause.

I honestly don't see a downside to giving us the option in the store, aside from perhaps giving them unintentionally early when the new survival world finally launches, but that is, at best, a transient concern that I couldn't imagine having a lasting impact.

A downside is that patreons can basically get 1-2 elytras a month

Note: The commentary below does not necessarily reflect the views or beliefs of Dogcraft.net or its staff.
Short version: My Personal Opinion
-------------------------------------

The problem with allowing it to be sold on the store or in shops is there's no way to differentiate between worlds for how long you've been on that server.  The elytra is supposed to be an end game item (as far as vanilla exists today) and the ability to purchase it on Day 1 makes the game less vanilla.

And before we get into the "Well all the plugins make it less vanilla," lets look at it this way...The plugins make it easier to maintain a multiplayer server like this one.  Teleports are a necessary evil because the map gets spread out over vast areas.  Don't want to trudge out hours in the end?  Think about traversing hours just to get home because you ended up at spawn because a creeper blew up your bed and you're 30k blocks out.  Shop plugins are just there to prevent theft because then it's a he said/she said type of argument.  Claims are there to prevent people from destroying your stuff because they thought it was funny that 10 hours you put in was worth 2 minutes of their tnt.

With all that said, the glut of people flying around the end for multiple elytra has calmed over the last 5-6 months.  Once you have 5, there's no reason to get more other than to be greedy.  Now, if you're raiding the end cities as well as the elytra, then so be it, but flying to a city and taking only the elytra is not really necessary as you only need 5 for the quest.

I would much rather see elytra's banned from being traded, sold, or given away, especially on the new world.  This does three things:

1) Alleviates the mods from needing to police these trades/sales
2) Stops the messages in chat of "Why are elytra's 200 diamonds, I don't have that much"  (Yes, "Why can't I buy" will come up, but so be it)
3) Eliminates the need to carry multiple elytra.  Having 20 elytra that you can't sell/trade is kinda worthless unless you enjoy dying in the void.

Now I'm sure some staff smarter than me have discussed this to their wits end, but that's my opinion on it.

TLDR;
Let's not, they shouldn't be sold/traded at all.

PS: I'm sure there are a few people on the other worlds (mmo, amp, etc) who would have no issues selling you an elytra at 200 diamonds.  All that needs to be done is ask if anyone online has one.  Another option is to ask players online if they have a home set in the end on the world you're in so you can start off at that point instead of from the end island.

I think a better solution would be to have it as a drop from the dragon - perhaps not 100% drop. Or as a custom item to be crafted using items that are still difficult to be gathered.

The dragon is fine, just like on Hermitcraft. There's a reason every time a hermit goes end raiding, there are many unraided cities, especially because on Dogcraft we have many more members.

I certainly understand the 'day one' concerns, to a degree. But let's face it though, if someone is willing to spend a pile of DCD the moment they set foot onto a server, they can get pretty much everything an 'end-game' base require. Beacon? Check. Tricked out armor and tools? Check. Slime blocks, alchemy kit, fully-functional enchantment station? Check checkity check. I honestly feel that this concern, while legit, is a transient one.

I know I'd certainly be fine with the DCD shop being the ONLY option to buy elytra, it would probably be easier to police where/what worlds they end up in.. in theory at least. I don't know the mechanics/logistics behind that whole thing. Having the end dragon drop them would also be an idea I'd happily get behind.

Believe me, I've been looking to get my hands on an elytra via both of the options currently available, and they've both proven fruitless thus far, but I'm still at it. MMO seems to be in an odd state of attendance at the moment where the people on it regularly don't have an elytra, and the end has been pretty well explored by people that aren't playing any more.. and those that do are unwilling to part with their wings, leaving me up a certain creek sans paddling device. It's frustrating.

My personal view is that the only changes that should be made to a server are changes that make it more challenging (read: harder) for all players. The game's not hard, and most things only make the game easier still.

Hard = fun.
Easy = bored players.

Luckily for you lot, I'm not in charge.
