Rome is the base and project of 20.png Wanderer_06 on the Survival 5 Shepherd world of the Dogcraft Server.

Overview

Besides being the residence of 20.png Wanderer_06, Rome is intended as a scenic surrounding of the Colosseum, the focal point of the city. The Colosseum is intended to be a free-to-use server pvp arena, with a quality experience every time. It will officially open to the public after its opening event, but can already be accessed by /phome Rome. Besides the phome however, Rome is connected to the Shepherd West (red) Tunnel of the NTN (with a cactus stop thanks to 20.png Mika_Panda) and the Biome Galore Road of the RHN (quite a scenic route Wanderer had the pleasure of helping design). All roads lead to Rome... on Shepherd at least...

Rome began its planning phase several months before the start of Survival 5 in the hopes of having a clear view going forward. Being the largest build Wanderer has ever undertaken, the early planning definitely helped prevent burnout, and the clear goal helped focus efforts.

At the start of the Survival 5 world, 20.png Chriizsich, 20.png Kar204, and 20.png Wanderer_06 (later joined by 20.png Bigeater and 20.png ChargedBluey) found a village to the West of Shepherd spawn, and quickly set up starter farms and villager trading. After getting geared up, each member set off to create their own bases, except 20.png Wanderer_06, who built Rome conveniently next to the starter village. 20.png Chriizsich also built a large tower, cliffside, flying boat, and RHN shelter over the remains of the village, and the villagers and starter farms were slowly incorporated into Rome in more permanent buildings over the course of the season.

Each building in Rome was built by following a Google-Earth model in a creative world, and then transferring the build over to survival. This made the process that much more manageable for Wanderer. The large landscape surrounding the city, however, was hand-carved in the world. Those large rolling hills surrounding the Colosseum? Yeah. Hand-placed. And there used to be hills where the Colosseum now stands. All the hills were hand-dug while watching the entire Agents of Shield series on Disney+.

While Rome is not an ever-expanding city like that of Leon, that simply lets 20.png Wanderer_06 garner a sense of accomplishment, and has allowed him to assist in other projects such as the SRN, RHN, NTN, CSC, Leon, Tom's Tatties, Food Wars, etc., etc., (the list goes on). If 20.png Wanderer_06 is indeed able to host a successful server-wide event and open such a facility to the public, the sense of accomplishment and a satisfying end to his Minecraft experience will be unmatched.

Timeline

Construction of Rome began around 3/27/2022, just a week or so after the start of Survival 5, giving time for gearing up and some resource collection.

● The first building in Rome was a large-scale wool farm to supply future streets with light gray wool sidewalks.

● Quickly following the wool farm was an official storage room, into which all of the starter area resources were moved.

● 4/14/2022 Plans for the Dogcraft Pet Store started emerging, with a request for goats by StenLLuk, and the Y17 plot claimed in MOTTO.

● 5/12/2022 the iron farm from the starter area was moved into a more official Rome building.

● 5/23/2022 "The Road to Rome" was completed by connecting the "Biome Galore" Road far enough West to reach Rome.

● 5/28/2022 Rome's first partnership deal idea with Tom's Tatties was introduced to 20.png AwesomeTom21 via discord.

● 6/1/2022 20.png AwesomeTom21 officialized the partnership by placing an "Official Snack of Rome" sign in the Tom's Tatties X14 MOTTO plot

● 6/5/2022 The shell of the Colosseum was completed!! This included the three major walls, along with two more shorter inner walls and two covered stone areas. The center was also built of sandstone with a surrounding ring of coarse dirt, dirt, and gravel

● 6/7/2022 The starting villagers, along with fresh villagers to fill gaps, were moved into an official Rome building and incorporated into a neat, 96 villager trading hall. (It was completed on 6/7/2022, though it took more than just one day to finalize fletcher trades)

● 6/20/2022 The "Tom's Tatties mini putt putt ol' reliable 300 plane" was built flying the Tom's Tatties branding high and proud above the Colosseum

● 6/28/2022 Using twitch channel points, AwesomeTom21 claimed the former Wanderer_06's storage room as his own with a very official sign out front.

● 6/29/2022 Collected every single color and type of horse for the Shepherd DCPS building and new racetrack around the Colosseum

● 6/30/2022 A racetrack, along with banners and decorations, was officialized around the colosseum and with two of the walls. This included separate lanes for horses, donks, and pigs, with corresponding banners delegating the paths.

● 7/4/2022 The "Blue Team" of the Colosseum's Arena was handed over in an officially signed contract to 20.png AwesomeTom21 and Tom's Tatties Inc. This includes as stated in the contract: "decor, advertising, and merchandising responsibilities" in "full knowledge that Wanderer_06 will be [AwesomeTom21's and therefore Tom's Tatties'] adversary in the arena at all times by supporting the 'Red Team' with HIS full power and resources." The contract (signed on 7/4/2022) was signed in a newly built "business room" atop the Shepherd DCPS "Pink Building" HQ, a great room best used for its magnificent view of the Colosseum.

● Little was recorded over the winter months due to the busyness of 20.png Wanderer_06's schooling, but some progress was made, such as the completion of terraforming surrounding the city, and progress on sandbox building.

● The summer of 2023 led to the largest progress check since the summer of 2022. The completion of the final buildings in Rome, as well as the building of the Red and Blue team sections of the Colosseum, the improvements of the Colosseum for audience members, and the introduction of a ring of billboards atop the Colosseum are just a few upgrades the summer availability led to. With the big event rounding the corner, a living checklist has grown and been completed as the city is finalized.

The Colosseum

A HUGE part of Rome is the to-scale interpretation of the great Colosseum. While the stands take up a large majority of the ovular structure, the center of the Colosseum is a large PVP/PVE arena for all scenarios. Under and besides the central arena are team areas where gear and morale are housed. Surrounding the arena aboveground are the interactive stands for specators, making the Colosseum one of the first spectator-inclusive PVP arenas.

The Arena

The Arena and spectator-inclusive stands

Some notable ideas included:

● A maze underneath a sand-covered arena with ravagers inside, forcing players to navigate and fight each other while ravagers hunt them down and spectators watch from above.

● Mob cages along the sides like "How to train your Dragon" releasing challenges while the players try to avoid and outlast each other.

● A floodable arena for boat and trident-heavy battles

● The whole arena as a giant spleef (and PVP) arena, going down to bedrock.

● Chariot races (on pigs of course)

The arena was used many times in its simple sandstone oval form by Wanderer_06, AwesomeTom21, Mika_Panda, strawberrysham, FRAS3R, unknown537, and others in fun, spontaneous battles, going for hours on end sometimes. These sessions brought wonderfully insightful information (along with tons of fun times) to 20.png Wanderer_06 on how to improve the colosseum and area surrounding. A notable one was brought up by 20.png Mika_Panda, pointing out that they couldn't see the players fighting because the stands were simply out of view distance when the players were on the opposite side of the arena. Hence the closer stands.

The Teams

There are two teams in the arena: The red team and the blue team. The red team is owned by 20.png Wanderer_06 himself, and therefore has an extreme bias towards winning. The blue team is owned and supported by 20.png AwesomeTom21, hence the red team being populated by people who love to just kill Tom.

The preparation areas are cavernous spaces you can choose to enter from the initial entrance, besides the staircase leading to the spectator area. These areas have various gear levels for play, along with personal gear access via enderchests, and lockers to store gear.

The Stands

The stands surrounding the arena are some of the first (at least that I'm aware of) spectator-friendly stands. This means that they're interactive for those watching. The features include the standard pop-up market stalls and billboards for viewing and shopping purposes, but also snowballs to throw, lights and noteblocks to press, and even tipped arrow cannons to test your lucky aim on the competitors down below.

The Event

Wanderer's entire goal with the city of Rome has been to lead to a server-wide PVP and/or PVE event, resulting in the opening of the space to the public. With the busyness of life catching up to him, and Minecraft time needing to be reallocated elsewhere, this has been decided to be Wanderer's last hurrah in the Minecraft universe.

The planning has been over a year and a half in the making, so let's hope it's worth it! Hopefully the DCT will be willing and able to step up and assist Wanderer in hosting the big event and make it a success!

DCPS - The DogCraft Pet Store

Yes, this related to Rome

Rome, being a privately owned and operated city, needed some diversion from the constant grind of construction and development, especially in the early stages. The DogCraft Pet Store gave 20.png Wanderer_06 a fun break from building and grinding by introducing the adventuring, capturing, breeding, and transporting aspects of animals into regular gameplay, as well as a way to get to know more of the amazing DogCraft community! Just think, how often do you breed pandas by the hundreds? How often do you give yourself the challenge of capturing all 35 types of horses? (That one was rough, wouldn't suggest it) Screaming goats? The fastest donkey? The 9-slot llama?

Though the public service (for a fee) portion of DCPS was shut down due to time constraints, the infrastrucure and knowledge provided by the DCPS still helps provide mobs for the Colosseum, and great memories moving forward.
