_Shako, or Shako (pronounced SHAY-ko), also sometimes known as Shako_MC and formerly as ShakoRam, is a Cyberdog who joined Dogcraft in Summer 2020 during Survival 4. Shako is mainly active as a co-leader of the Road and Horse Network and is known for building Vitruvius and Shakoburg. Off Minecraft, Shako lives in Vermont, U.S. and is an architecture historian and heritage conservator, a saxophonist, and an ice hockey player.

About
Shako began playing Minecraft in March 2011 with the username nitromegamer, having been a fan of the Miniclip-associated Flash browser game company Nitrome. Other past usernames include SpaghettiGoat (2015-2019) and ShakoRam (2019-2020).
Shako joined Dogcraft while a server he had played on continuously since 2011 was temporarily closed in mid-2020. He is one of the leaders of the Road and Horse Network (RHN), for which he constructs and documents roads. He began by straightening and widening Gaia Road on Survival 4 and then volunteered to build the roads around the Spawn Sea and south to Lotus which had been planned by the RHN. In Survival 5, he established the Shepherd Turnpike and Labrador Turnpike as main connector roads across those servers, currently 11.0 km and 7.5 km long, respectively, and has constructed most of the other public roads on Labrador.

In Survival 4 he built a large town called Vitruvius, 2.5km south of Gaia. However, his primary functional base was a four-story house, called _Shako House, immediately adjacent to the Gaia city line.

In Survival 5, he is building Shakoburg, a megabase based on a dreamlike abstraction of a typical American university campus. Most of the structures are based on either real-life buildings or common styles found on collegiate buildings, and they are mashed together to form a continuous interior space. At the center is a replica of Bradfield Hall at Cornell University by architect Ulrich Franzen, and the storage hall is based on Barton Hall, also at Cornell University, by architect Lewis Pilcher.

{{{}ROOTPAGENAME}} is the base of _Shako on the Survival 5 Labrador world of the Dogcraft Server. It is located one kilometer due east of the Spawn, along Pioneer Valley Road of the Road and Horse Network and Labrador East Station of the Community Rail Network.

About
Shakoburg is a megastructure composed of multiple sub-structures connected directly into each other. While some of the buildings appear to be separate above-ground, they are in fact connected by underground passageways.

The designs of the buildings are generally based on university campus buildings in North America, where multiple layers of Neoclassical, Gothic-revival, and Modern design exist closely together, often merging abruptly. The intention is to simulate the chaotic and often confusing built environment that results from university campuses being expanded and modified over decades and centuries.

The centerpiece of the base is the Industrial Tower, a replica of Bradfield Hall, a plant biology laboratory at Cornell University, by architect Ulrich Franzen. The automatic farms and super-smelter are all located inside the tower, with water streams carrying items to the Storage Hall. The Storage Hall is very loosely based on Barton Hall, an indoor athletic field and military training building also at Cornell University, by architect Lewis Pilcher.

Besides structures based on real-life buildings, several rooms in Shakoburg are based on _Shako's childhood dreams, including the Purple Dream Room and the Surreal Room. Two swimming pool rooms, both based on dreams and similar to common liminal-space depictions of swimming pools, are planned for Shakoburg.

The name "Shakoburg" was considered for Vitruvius in Survival 4, but _Shako felt it was too personal for what was intended to be a community build.

History
Shakoburg was originally intended to be built on Akita, and an outline for the Industrial Tower still exists at a small base owned by _Shako just under two kilometers north of Spawn on Akita. The project was moved to Labrador when the decision was made to build the Road and Horse Network on Labrador instead of Akita. The exterior of the Industrial Tower was the first completed phase, mostly in April 2022. The Storage Hall, the Visitor Center, and the East Atrium were started next and built slowly through Summer and early Autumn 2022. The Purple Dream Room and Surreal Room, the latter above the former, were completed in early January 2023.

About
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Shako grew up in Morgan County, West Virginia and currently lives in Vermont. He is a masters student in Historic Preservation at the University of Vermont and holds a B.A. degree in History from Shepherd University in West Virginia. He has worked a summer job writing historic building surveys and preparing construction documents for a small architecture firm, and he volunteers on a community historic buildings board in West Virginia.

Shako began playing Minecraft in March 2011 with the username nitromegamer, having previously been a fan of Nitrome, though he currently does not play any other games. Other past usernames include SpaghettiGoat (2015-2019) and ShakoRam (2019-2020). He played on a small SMP server from August 2011 until it temporarily closed in May 2020, and he currently manages buildings and infrastructure on a friend's Five Nights at Freddy's-themed Bedrock Edition realm.

On Dogcraft
Shako joined Dogcraft while a server he had played on continuously since 2011 was temporarily closed in mid-2020.

He is most active as a member of the Road and Horse Network (RHN), for which he constructs and documents roads. He began by straightening and widening Gaia Road on Survival 4 and then volunteered to build the roads around the Spawn Sea and south to Lotus which had been planned by the RHN.

In Survival 4 he built a large town called Vitruvius, 2.5km south of Gaia. However, his primary functional base was a four-story house, called _Shako House, immediately adjacent to the Gaia city line.

Throughout September 2021 he built the Nether Tunnel Network overworld tower at 30 kilometers (30000 blocks) south on Husky as an entry in the NTN tower build contest. The building is postmodern in style and is nine stories high including a partially-underground bottom floor.

In Survival 5, he is building a mega-base based on a dreamlike abstraction of a typical American university campus.
The Road & Horse Network (RHN) is a group project focused on building and maintaining over 30 kilometers of roads across the Survival 4 Multiplayer worlds of the Dogcraft Server. The current network is mostly around the larger Husky spawn area, but ever expanding. The roads are the primary way to travel by horse, donkey, mule, foot or pig to visit all the connected cities, towns and player bases. A similar project, the .Path Network Group operates a road network on the Beagle world.

The RHN can be seen as the younger, smaller, and less organized nephew of the other travel networks: SRN (Survival Railway Network) and NTN (Nether Transport Network).

History
The project was first imagined as a semi-serious suggestion by _edo (who also founded the SRN and the NTN) to add another discussion channel on the Discord SRN/NTN server, to talk about the planning and building of a road network that would go alongside the Survival Railway Network. Two roads, present-day Takeshi Road and Gaia Road, had already been built and there was potential for more. The suggestion was kindly dismissed. So instead, on July 14th, 2020, 3.5 months after the start of the Husky world, _edo started a new Discord server solely for the creation of a roads network.

Since then, the RHN has steadily grown. As of July 2021, the RHN Discord server has 67 members, 17 of whom have actually built parts of the network, and the network of roads reaches up to 7.5k blocks away from spawn. Notably, _Shako built a large section of the newer roads (Stone Exchange Road, Eagle Road, Lotus Isthmus Road, Flower Hills Road) and upgraded many of the older roads.

The Builders
These 17 players, often locals who have their residences close to the roads, have built the RHN (as of July 25th 2021, in alphabetical order):

_edo _Shako Aeghu ArchitectEagle EddyTeach Elednor89 expedtadam FangsofAmber IhopEnchiladas Kinda_lost LoLoBooM4k Montenator Skelleton123 StenLLuk thePineapple0 TheWhiteTiger TyrantrumGOD

What is built
The built projects consist not only of public roads, but also many bridges, signposts, more than two dozen public shelters. In Spawn City is the RHN Centre (view in map) which, alongside public stables and shelter, also has general info about the RHN, a shop selling everything needed for horse riding, a horse testing range, and more.

The RHN facilitates everything needed to make it easy and enjoyable for everyone to travel by horse (and also by donkey, mule, foot or pig).

For a comprehensive overview of all roads and shelters, see this list of roads and paths and list of shelters.

How to participate
The RHN is an active, ongoing project. Everyone can help with building and maintaining the network! The best way is to join the RHN Discord server. Ask any of the above players in game for an invite, or search/ask for a public link on any of the other Dogcraft related Discord servers.

Design Guidelines

Roads
RHN roads need to be both passable and comfortable for horse traffic. This means the roads are at least three blocks wide with four blocks of clearance above. Most RHN roads however are four blocks wide, five blocks high. The most common surface materials used are grass path blocks and spruce slabs. Sometimes though, especially through settlements, other local styles are used.

Shelter
RHN Shelters provide the travel with a place to rest. It should be mob-safe. It needs stables to park a horse, beds, an ender chest, a public chest (players can leave food for others), a crafting table, a furnace, a lectern with a logbook for travellers to write their name and date of visiting, a small map of the local area. For recognisability, the shelter needs a lime green vane on a pole on its roof and the "RHN" banner letters, which can be acquired in the RHN Centre. Signs should be dark oak with lime green font.

Skeleton horses can be left in the stables, optionally with a saddle. They can't be owned by players; they are for public/shared use.

The claim-protected shelter should have /containtertrust all, so that everyone can use doors, beds, chests, logbook and available skeleton horses, etc. If so desired, you can protect a maintenance area from public access with the Sticky Locks plugin (/sl info).

The reference RHN shelter seen in the images can be visited in-game at Huksy, x:110, z:-840 (view in map).

Signposts
Directional signage, placed at each intersection of two thoroughfares, consists of dark oak signs stacked vertically, with lime-colored text (white on older signs), placed on a lime concrete block surrounded by a dark oak plank base. Each sign provides directions to towns and bases along the route using arrows, text, and a number representing the number of kilometers (to the nearest 1/10) to the destination.

Minor roads leading to single destinations may be marked with only a single dark oak sign on a dark oak fence, but this is not officially specified.

No more than one signpost at an intersection, and no more than three stacked signs per signpost.

Kilometer markers
Kilometer markers, or "slab signs," are placed every 1/10-kilometer (100 blocks) along every RHN road and at each road's beginning and end points. They consist of a dark oak slab with a dark oak sign with white text. The four lines of text on each sign are as follows: <code>ROAD NAME

NAME SUFFIX (e.g. ROAD, AVENUE)

- DISTANCE - (e.g. - 1.7 -, - 2.4 -, - begin -)

RHN.</code>

Road Documentation
The entire RHN system is documented on maps produced regularly by _Shako.

Road distances are measured by _Shako using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet in which the coordinates of each vertex (or other change of direction) in a road's geometry are entered and a Pythagorean Theorem algorithm outputs the length of each segment and the cumulative distance for all of the entered segments. Every road has its own spreadsheet.
_Shako, or Shako (pronounced SHAY-ko), also sometimes known as ShakoRam, is a Cyberdog who joined Dogcraft in Summer 2020 during Survival 4.

About
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Shako grew up and currently lives in West Virginia. He is an undergraduate university student studying architecture history and historic preservation, and he plays alto saxophone in university and community ensembles. He has worked a summer job writing historic building surveys and preparing construction documents for a small architecture firm, and he volunteered on a community historic buildings board until it dissolved in mid-2021.

He is most active as a member of the Husky Road and Horse Network (RHN), for which he constructs and documents roads. He began by straightening and widening Gaia Road and then volunteered to build the roads around the Spawn Sea and south to Lotus which had been planned by the RHN.

Currently he is also building a town called Vitruvius, 2.5km south of Gaia. His primary base is a four-story house, called _Shako House, immediately adjacent to the Gaia city line.

Throughout September 2021 he built the Nether Tunnel Network overworld tower at 30 kilometers (30000 blocks) south on Husky as an entry in the NTN tower build contest. The building is postmodern in style and is nine stories high including a partially-underground bottom floor.

Trivia
*A Shako is a military uniform hat originating in 18th-century Europe and common today with American marching bands, an activity in which he is active. The "Ram" in ShakoRam refers to the mascot of his university, a live Dorset Ram named J.C.
*Shako has been a regular viewer of Joe Hills since late 2019 after viewing the Hermitcraft Recap and being captivated by a clip from the episode "Is Falsewell Motel a false wall between worlds?" Shako's introduction to Hermitcraft was in early 2019 through watching MumboJumbo's redstone videos.
*While in secondary school (high school), Shako attended summer programs at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory campus in Green Bank, and conducted a volunteer project involving delivering local road and address data to Google Maps and other GIS providers because there was no accurate GIS data available for the area at the time.
*Shako collects antique clocks; his collection includes a German Empire wall clock and a Swiss musical clock among others.
*While only fluent in English, Shako is learning German and Yiddish, which are both ancestral languages in his family.
*Shako owns an Instagram and Flickr of architecture photography under the name @archizackture.
*Shako posts to r/hermitcraft and r/hermitchat as u/zaxophone.bswv and to Hermits' Twitters as @archizackture.

ROOTPAGENAME is an active town on the Survival 4 Husky world of the Dogcraft Server. The town was founded, planned, and constructed by _Shako starting in late Summer 2020. Vitruvius is located almost exactly 3000 blocks perfectly southwest from Spawn. Vitruvius is currently not any player's main base, as _Shako's primary residence is located on the northern border of Gaia.

About
Vitruvius is modeled on the Victorian-American city pattern, with rows of mixed-use commercial and residential buildings that are narrower along the street and longer perpendicular to the street. Architectural styles emulated in Vitruvius include Italianate, Georgian, Greek Revival, Neoclassical-revival, Romanesque-revival, and Art Deco.

Vitruvius was started by _Shako in response to the rapid expansion of the Road and Horse Network (RHN). The area made sense, from a planning perspective, to be the site of a junction/hub of roads. _Shako took inspiration from the transport hub cities of the eastern United States, which grew rapidly during the industrialization of the U.S. with Victorian architecture spreading and evolving rapidly. Currently five major roads maintained by the RHN converge at Vitruvius: Flower Hills Road toward The Haven (2.1km) and Gaia (3.0km); Eagle Road toward Oasis (4.7km); Vitruvius Road toward the SRN Headquarters (3.2km); Mountain March Road toward the Stone Exchange (2.5km); and Lotus Isthmus Road toward Lotus (3.1km) and Pinksville (3.2km).

The majority of buildings in Vitruvius are mixed-use buildings, designed to be bought as property by any player, with a shop on the main floor and two or three floors of residential space above. While the first floor must be a shop, the upstairs space is not as restricted and may be used other ways, even as expanded shop space.

The main square of Vitruvius is located at the intersection of Smithers Avenue and Lotus Isthmus Road, flanked by the Trading Hall and Super Smelter buildings. A replica of XisumaVoid's Gaudy Guardian, modified with stone and andesite, is placed in the center of the square.

Vitruvius is named after an ancient Roman architect who coined the phrase "firmitas, utilitas, venustas," meaning "strength, usefulness, beauty" and whose writings about proportion in design inspired Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.

ROOTPAGENAME is a village on the Survival 4 Husky world of the Dogcraft Server. It was planned and built by _Shako, who is currently the only resident. Blues Beach is located on the end of a peninsula into a large lake across from Pinksville and Lotus. It is 1 kilometer southwest of Vitruvius. It can be accessed by the Road and Horse Network using Blues Beach Road from Vitruvius Road or Spoons Neck Road from Lotus Isthmus Road, by the Survival Railway Network from Vitruvius, or by /phome Blues Beach.

About
A number of inspirations led _Shako to build Blues Beach. One was reading an article about Times Beach, Missouri, a riverside vacation community that was demolished in the 1980s after being contaminated with toxic oil. This reminded _Shako of Briny Beach, a dull and gray beachside in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Thirdly, the name "Blues Beach" is directly from Blues Beach, West Virginia, a riverside unincorporated community (no municipal government, under county-level jurisdiction) consisting mostly of vacation houses along the South Branch of the Potomac River. _Shako, who is from West Virginia, lives relatively near Blues Beach and has visited in person. Its name was thought by _Shako to have a connotation similar to "Briny Beach," having a dismal sound from the word "blues" referring to sadness.

With these factors in mind, the idea for Blues Beach on Dogcraft was to be a small, village-like beachside community with shack-like and rustic houses, having a vacation-home or economically depressed appearance that is simultaneously charming and unexciting.

Architecture
The structures in Blues Beach are vernacular (folk) houses, mostly taking forms found in Appalachia such as the I-house or coal company houses such as those in Cass, West Virginia. The houses are built with horizontal stripped logs to emulate clapboard siding and have small windows spaced apart. The interiors are fully built with an average of five or six rooms inside. The only buildings with commercial intent are a small shop in the center of the village, with an apartment above, and the Survival Railway Network station, which has a Tudor-inspired style that evokes late-19th-century railroad stations while fitting the cottage-like theme of the village.

This dark story reminded _Shako of Briny Beach, a dull and gray beachside in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Its name was thought by _Shako to have a connotation similar to "Briny Beach," having a dismal connotation from the word "blues" referring to sadness.

The only buildings with commercial intent are a small shop in the center of the village, with an apartment above, and the Survival Railway Network station.

RHN.</code>
}<br />

Road Documentation
The entire RHN system is documented on maps produced regularly by _Shako.

Road distances are measured by _Shako using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet in which the coordinates of each vertex (or other change of direction) in a road's geometry are entered and a Pythagorean Theorem algorithm outputs the length of each segment and the cumulative distance for all of the entered segments. Every road has its own spreadsheet.
